IEP Music Therapy Services
Music therapy provides unique and motivating strategies to address students’ Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals in the academic setting. Our music therapist previously gained 4 years of professional experience providing IEP music therapy to students grades PK-12th in the Baltimore County Public School system to target students’ individual IEP goals and better assist them in their overall education programs.
Music Therapy to Target IEP Goals
Music therapy provides students an alternative way to learn and practice skills if they are not responding to regular therapies and/or if they are strongly motivated by music in learning skills. Music therapy targets IEP goals such as:
Language and Communication goals including increasing vocalization, word usage, expanding phrases, and improving receptive listening skills
Social and Emotional goals including increasing social reciprocity, turn-taking, emotional awareness and regulation, and calming strategies
Academic goals including learning math and phonics concepts
Motor Goals including improving fine and gross motor skills
Music Therapy Assessments
Music therapy assessments designed for students in special education are used to assess a student’s functioning in IEP goal areas and determine if music therapy strategies may help to provide a unique assist and motivation to students in achieving their IEP goals.
An assessment will include meeting with an IEP team to gain background information on the student, observations in the classroom setting, conducting a music therapy assessment session using music therapy strategies which target specific IEP goals and objectives, and evaluating a student’s responses to music therapy strategies in the music therapy assessment.
IEP Meetings
At IEP meetings, the music therapist shares results from assessments, and/or updates parents and team members on students’ periodic progress toward goals in music therapy. The music therapist shares insight with the educational team about unique music therapy strategies which have helped the students to improve in IEP goal areas. The team may share strategies with the music therapist which will help to inform music therapy and a student’s overall progress toward goals.
